COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will consider filmmaking as a means to investigate and advance social justice. Bringing their own passions and perspectives, students will learn how to create films that inventively explore topics such as human rights, climate justice, public health, and racial and economic equity. We will work individually and in small groups on a series of exercises culminating in collaborative final projects. Through critique and screenings, we will scrutinize our role as makers responding to the entangled demands of aesthetics, ethical representation, and social impact.

The course is open to a range of students from beginners looking to learn the basics of documentary storytelling to more advanced filmmakers with an ongoing project they would like to bring into the class. We hope to have a mix of undergraduates and graduate students, including those pursuing the Critical Media Practice secondary field or attending the schools of law, government, or divinity. Priority will be given to current AFVS concentrators and CMP students as well as students planning to apply to those fields.
