Section Activity:
Your goal is to draft a memo to the FAS Dean with recommendations on how Generative AI should be incorporated within the Harvard College curriculum. Your TF will split your section into 4 groups, each of which will draft a separate section of the document:
- Academic Integrity and Course Policies. Read the section from the College Handbook about academic integrity and the Honor Code. Write a recommendation for how this section should be edited or expanded to include clear guidelines on student use of Generative AI in coursework. Be sure to include the reasoning behind these guidelines.
- Broad Curricular Requirements. Read the section from the College Handbook about the College requirements (such as Expos, Gen Ed, and the Language Requirement). Write a recommendation for including Generative AI as a requirement for all students. If you think that there should not be any College-wide requirement about AI, explain your position.
- New Applied AI Concentration. Read the description of the Applied Math concentration from the Fields of Concentration. Draft a proposal for a new concentration in Applied AI, with a similar structure: students would take courses in computer science and AI, along with courses in a target area of application. Give some examples of creative concentration plans for AI with various fields (science, social science, arts, humanities, etc.)
- Uses of AI in Instruction. Read the FAS Faculty Handbook on responsibilities of instructors. Write new guidelines for the appropriate use of AI in instruction. Consider AI-led teaching, tutoring, and grading as possible areas to consider.
Your memo should include policy proposals, recommendations, advice, and justifications for all of the above. In some cases, you may wish to provide a menu of policy options that could be adapted based on specific disciplines or curricular needs.
All four groups will work simultaneously to draft their portions of the memo. Use ChatGPT as appropriate to help with writing and organization. Take about 20-25 minutes to work on this in small groups.
Once this work is complete, each group should share their proposal with the entire section. Get feedback and edit the text to account for everyone's suggestions and concerns. Plan on about 10-15 minutes for discussion of each part of the proposal.
Conclude the section by combining all of the proposals into a single memo, with a succinct introduction.
