Week 2 Part 2: Installing Joomla on SiteGround

Important CMS configuration note for SiteGround

In your SiteGround control panel, scroll down to the Joomla Tools section and locate the button for the SuperCacher.

Once there, make sure page caching is turned off for level 1. (I believe the other levels come with a higher level of subscription than we have.)

The SuperCacher will cache your CMS site. That means it stores a copy of the site, once someone requests a page, and holds that version of the page fully built for some period of time. You don't see your changes immediately under these circumstances.  That's awesome if your site is in production, because this caching may make your site seem to run more quickly because it doesn't have to build a page each time the page is requested. But the downside is that if you make changes to your site (like if you're building it), you don't see those changes immediately. You can waste a ton of time wondering why your site isn't "working"... so be sure to disable this setting!

Determining your URL

If you are using a domain name with your hosting, and you follow the instructions in this video, your website should be located at: www.yourdomainname.com/joomla Links to an external site. (like www.jenkramer.biz/joomla Links to an external site.)

If you are using the SiteGround provided name, this may work in one of two ways.

One, if you have given the hosting enough time to establish itself and propagate, you may be able to reach your site via an address like jenk.siteground.com -- add /joomla on the end to get to your site.

Two, if you have any trouble with that form of address, try this form instead:

server hostname/~username/joomla

Or, for example, siteground237.com/~jenkrame/joomla

If you need to access the back end of Joomla, always place a /administrator after the URL, as in jenkramer.biz/joomla/administrator
