MATH 99R: Tutorial

Course goals:

Creative technology enables us to explore, interact with, and experience mathematics in new ways. Within a short period of time we have seen for example the rise powerful computer algebra systems, the development of web technologies for creating interactive laboratories, advances in printing technologies that enable the fabrication of mathematical illustrations, new photographic techniques producing panoramic views, and remote sensing technology for producing earth resource visualization.   Meanwhile, advancements in large language models, stable diffusion and proof verification offer innovative tools for shaping and visualizing mathematical structures.  In the tutorial, these developments are covered theoretically and with examples.

Course format:

The first part of the course will be presentations by Dr. Knill about various topics. In the second part each student will present a topic of interest. 

Typical enrollees:

Students interested in mathematical visualization, both with or without technology. 

The websites from last two years gives an idea of what was done in 2024 or 2025.  While some topics will return, new topics will be explored in 2025.  For more information about this course, send an email to Oliver Knill.

Assignments and grading:

Grades will be based on attendance, weekly assignments, a final presentation and a final paper.

Meeting time:

The tutorial will meet (tentatively) on Tuesdays from 6-8:30 PM.  On Thursday at tjat time, Dr. Knill will be available for consultating on individual projects.

In this course, AI is permitted to help with the creative process.  But its use must be acknowledged.
