GRADUATE STUDENTS

Attendance and participation. You must attend all presentations as well as arrive on time. You are expected to read all books in advance and to come to class prepared with at least one informed question or comment. You won't have to read Frank Burke's A Companion to Italian Cinema in its entirety; the PDF of the introduction and a couple of chapters will be provided.

Books. All students enrolled on the course for credit will receive the books free of charge by the De Bosis Lectureship. Students not enrolled on the course but who attend the Colloquium will receive the books for which they are respondents  or co-respondents or that they choose to review.

Reviews. Please review (either in English or in Italian) at least six books presented in the Colloquium. (If you decide to review A Companion to Italian Cinema you'll have to read the entire book). One review should be 1500-2000 words long; the other ones 400 to 700 words long. They must be written in Microsoft Word. Preferably review each book before its presentation and mention or show it to the author of the book. Email the review to me by the following Monday.

Respondent. Select one or two of the eleven presenters in order to meet them outside class (including dinner after the presentation), interview them at the Media Production Center, and begin the Q&A section with your intervention. Edited video clips of the interviews will be posted on La Voce di New York Links to an external site..

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

You can choose to abide to the same procedures than the graduate students (with the exception that you'll have to read only five books, and write only four short reviews).

Or you can choose the following procedures:

Attendance and participation. You must attend all presentations as well as arrive on time. You are expected to read at least five books in advance and to come to class prepared with informed questions and comments about them.

Response papers: Each week after class (and by Saturday evening) you must send me a very short paper (250 to 400 words) concerning the presentation you just attended—including the presentations of books that you did not read. Without requiring any research or additional information, it allows you to express your intellectual reactions, comments, doubts, and questions about the lecture and following conversation. Please send me all RPs by email (in Word). RPs can be written either in English or in Italian.

Reviews: As a final paper you’ll have to write two short reviews of two of the books that were presented at the Colloquium. The reviews must be 400 to 700 words long and can be written either in English or in Italian. They are due by May 4.
